We no longer answer incoming calls, not ever, because of the volume of spam. We use our cell phones instead. The reason we've kept the landline was the idea that in a catastrophic event (like earthquake, I'm in California) with power and cell towers unavailable, we'd have a shot at using the landline for communication.
